Mystery Package

The long-awaited arrival of my new t-shirt. Thanks @belchingmonkey!

Seinfeld- still got it!!

This is for anyone who thinks Jerry Seinfeld has lost a step. I still say there's an unappreciated degree of difficulty in doing comedy without using adult language. In the tradition of the great Bill Cosby, Seinfeld has mastered this fine art:

Celebrating the Marathon with a Hoppin' Frog

When you're running 26.2 miles, you have lots of free time to ponder random things. One of the things I considered during last Sunday's marathon was "what kind of beer am I going to have to celebrate this accomplishment??". Granted I had a Sam Adams after the race, but that wasn't my true celebration brew. I knew this would require a trip to Julio's Liquors and a careful selection.

Fortunately my Julio's trip didn't take long. As a certified hop head, this beer practically jumped (pun intended) off the shelf and landed in my arms. Allow me to introduce you to Hoppin' Frog Hop Dam Triple IPA. Yes, TRIPLE IPA. I'm anticipating a full-blown hop assault later this evening, and I'm going to savor every minute of it. Having enjoyed several other Hoppin' Frog selections in the past, I'm confident this one won't disappoint.

Cheers!!

Hyannis here I come!

Happy Carb Day

Today I began my pre-race diet for this Sunday's Hyannis Marathon. This was a big challenge for me, as I had to eat a series of meals that will help me retain water and make sure my glycogen stores will have enough energy for the duration of the race. I generally hate to feel the way I do right now, which is BLOATED. Anyhow, I figured it might be fun to blog what I had to eat today in an effort to hit a minimum 500 grams of carbohydrates...

Breakfast:

  • 1 small glass of orange juice
  • Stack of 3 french toast (white bread was used)
Lunch:

  • 1 footlong turkey sub on honey oat from Subway
  • Some Cool Ranch Doritos (I couldn't help it)
  • 1 12-ounce glass of skim milk
Mid-afternoon snack:

  • 1 Odwalla fruit smoothie (this alone was 68g of carbs)
Dinner:

  • Giant plate of Rigatoni with meatballs
  • 2 slices of french bread
  • 1 12-ounce glass of skim milk
In between these meals I funneled in as much water as possible. I limited myself to only 2 cups of coffee today (big challenge for me), and I'm going without beer until after the race.

So will all this nutrition stuff help? You'll have to ask me around the 20-mile mark on Sunday... :-)

End of the Road

Final long marathon training run complete! 10 miles and I felt great. 1 week from tomorrow I'll be toeing the line in Hyannis! God help me...

Facebook Commenting Fun

Today I made a Facebook comment that I enjoyed so much I decided to capture it here for posterity's sake. Thank goodness my friends encourage me like they do. (I blurred the faces & names to protect the innocent):

Birthday Weekend Brews

My birthday weekend gave me the opportunity to try a couple new (to me) brews: Allagash Tripel Reserve & Long Trail Winter White. I enjoyed both, but the Long Trail was my favorite. The orange & coriander flavors really appealed to me, and it had a nice warming effect. In the wake of the Patriots' loss, this beer gave me hope that better times are ahead.
